Hands Off! In D.C.
Betsey Rice’s Reflections on the Hands Off Rally
Betsey wasn't planning to go on the trip to Washington, but when she learned on the deadline date for sign up that the bus was not full, she decided to go both to help fill up the bus and also to be counted among the crowd on the Mall.
Although the bus was late getting started, she was pleasantly surprised that they were able to park closer than expected - just a 5 minute walk to the Mall.
With over 100,000 attendees, it was not possible to get where one could see the speakers. By maneuvering closer, however, Betsey and a small group of others were able to get where they could hear. Unfortunately the sound system was not designed for such a large crowd.
Betsey noted that the crowd was peaceful and friendly, but perhaps missing some expected energy. The signs however, were often clever.
Although she was glad she went, she concluded that next time she would probably choose a smaller protest, possibly closer to home.
